new south park episode is about wrestling.
in worcester, MA today. We crashed in Cambridge last night which was cool. Mosses and I walked around the Harvord U. campus which was very pretty.
We're playing with a Flock of Seagulls/80's cover band called "Flock of Assholes." No joke. The first half of the shows on this tour was awesome but I think the last half is going to be/has been weird/poorly attended. oh well.

I am in Richmond, Virgina and could get some sort of cool local resturant food but decided that I really, really need some broccoli cheddar soup from Panera to beat this cold weather, so here I am. By myself (feels good). Feels good and delicious.

we played a pretty ridiculous show in Atlanta, GA tonight. Tons of kids rocking out.. Totally classic pfeiffer.
Atlanta apparently has a Beirut fetish (in an ok way). The opening act was a dude and a trombonist and the dude played ukulele and had a total Zach Condon croon. He seemed like a pretty big tool but his music was ok. The band that played after us was full on style. Accordion, upright bass, banjo, guitar, glockenspiel, a dude playing a bass drum and a dude playing a snare drum. Totally good, though, and super cool dudes (Lord Christ or something like that was their name).

I went and visited the lab a few weeks back, and it was a lot of fun. The cutest/saddest part was: I guess Aujah (what'chu lookin at, HO!?) kept asking where I was all day, and, like, got really sad and started crying asking about me. They gave her a picture of me that they have and I guess she calmed down and went off on her own holding the picture! Super cute!!! But by the time I got there that day she had left. Rachael (cutest baby ever) sort of took a couple seconds when I walked in to remember me... it was hilarious, she had a blank look on her face when I walked in and after, like, 5 seconds got this huuuuuuuuge smile. Oh man. I plan on going back the day of the Smoking Popes/Light Pollution show (friday). Totally excited to see her and Aujah.

The show in Philadelphia was one of the most fun shows I've played in a while.
There were a shit ton of people (all of which were super pumped to be there... and Philly is, like, Shawn's home town, since he grew up in a nearby suburb), and we played with some sweet bands, particularly Slingshot Dakota who were TOTALLY AWESOME and both super nice. I talked to the keyboardist (the band is a keyboardist and drummer) for a long time after the set about Norm MacDonald and Toby Foster. Good conversation topic.

Im trying to see if I can get everywhere I need to go via the 'L'... so far it seems pretty feasible (i.e. the Inspector Owl show at the bottom lounge is only about 35-40 min. away with a trip on the red then green line).
The Wilson stop (which is the one closest to me) seems like it could be pretty sketchy late so that will definitely be an adventure to say the least.

I'm thinking I'm going to do a Kind of Like Spitting set for the scrambler this year. Part of me wants me to do a Bazan set, but if the scrambler is much of anything like the House Halloween show, it's sort of lame to do sets of people that are still totally active so yeah, I think a Ben Barnett set would be pretty good.
Let's hope I'm not out of town on whatever day it is determined to be.

so I pick the night we are around all the people that own Netherfriends' label to get completely obliterated (for the first time in, like, months no less). Hilarious. Everyone seemed amused so that's good, despite being more than a little embarrassing.
Conversely we played our best show of tour last night so that's good. I'm excited to play DeKalb and be in DeKalb tonight. I'm gonna try to get the guys to leave early from here which should work. This is the first time anyone has been up this early, Shawn's meeting with the label dudes right now, and I think when we get back we'll take off.

We're playing in Bloomington, IN today. They were talking about drinking after the show.
It's weird, I have had no desire to drink since I moved to chicago. It may be a comfort thing (I never fell right drinking unless I'm comfortable with the people I'm around; and I guess aside from Eric, his girlfriend, and Shawn and the drummer of Netherfriends, I don't really know anyone). I have a shit ton of beer/liquour from Lauren's wedding which I'm not complaining about, but I guess I just don't know when I'm going to consume it. Bleh.
Tour is going kind of ridiculously but good. We did a date in Minneapolis, then in Valporaiso, IN. The following night we had a show literally 15 minutes out of Chicago so we just ended up staying at our respective houses that night. Then yesterday we were supposed to play a show in Lansing, MI that Shawn was not at all confident in (other band didn't have a myspace, I guess the venue or whatever is really shitty, etc.) so we just ended up not going to save money since we were already at home (i.e. if we had been on the road somewhere we probably would have just done it). Hilarious.
So we left for Bloomington this morning which we are now referring to as the start of the "real" tour. Sweet.
I did end up seeing Up with Mary which was really good/sad/good again. Save for one horrible plot device or whatever you would call it involving dogs being able to "talk" through a collar voice translator. Kinda cheesy but oh well.
There are a lot of mosquitoes here.

So, yesterday as the first day I got together with Netherfriends (just Shawn yesterday, no drummer). It was a little intimidating... I've never been in a band or whatever where, during rehearsal, someone stops and (in regards to a vocal harmony) goes, "no, it's an "ahh," not an "oooh," let's do it again."
Super meticulous, which I am not used to. It seemed like Shawn didn;t feel like I was ready at all and kept rubbing his eyes with his palms in frustration.
I felt a little shitty about it and we work for about two hours and left.
The night got a bit better. We went to his place and he played me a bunch of stuff that he's been working on. Also made me an awesome tempeh pita thing which I will attempt to re-create sometime. We watched the Simpsons and drank w/ his roommate and then he and I went to a bar where this pretty awful band was playing. I left at about midnight and turned in.
Today, however, rehearsal went awesome. We practice w/ the new drummer and everything sounded good. We got through three originals and even stumbled upon writing a new song for the tour, which was awesome. I left rehearsal feeling quite pumped (whereas yesterday when I turned in for the night I felt a little shitty).
Let's hope this momentum keeps up.

I totally broke down as I was driving out of DeKalb and it sucked. It didn't help listening to David Bazan either. I called Lauren and we had a short conversation which I think helped get me through the emotional part of it. I'm totally going to miss DeKalb and I feel like no matter where I had moved (had it been Milwaukee or anywhere else) I would have had the same reaction. It was like breaking up with a girlfriend of 5 years, not because you weren't interested, but because life ok this metaphor is fucking horribly written but you get the idea.
Now I'm trying to set up my new room and it sucks even more than moving itself.

Working on the Netherfriends set... I have a pretty decent guitar/microphone set up now to go along with a good keyboard setup:

I'll run the mic through the blue preamp... then that into the channel switcher ("switchblade"). The mic will be for vocal effects/cornet loop stuff that may happen... the guitar will also go into the channel switch. I'm not sure if I want to add a chorus pedal to the reverb and delay/loop pedals I already have...

then I guess there's a couple songs where Shawn wanted me to play bass, but since I don't have one, I remembered Ben Grigg uses the same keyboard I do for Geronimo! bass parts and it sounds good... so I'll run the Electro as a bass. I don't really know enough about the Lead but I should probably figure out a few good patches to use, also.
Getting pretty excited about all this crap!!! I've learned about 4 of 8 songs so far.

Buffalo Tofu with Vegan Ranch / Blue Cheese ! Vegan / Gluten Free Pizza (onions, garlic, and maybe a little tomato)
Also I am very excited to get a couple new pedals that will make it so I can run vocals through my guitar pedals while simultaneously doing guitar stuff.

so, yesterday at the Sunn0))) show, despite body jarring noise levels, I would have to say I was less than impressed. I even had low expectations, and I guess they were met. The show was definitely unique, but I'm not really sure if I would go so far as to say "creative." I dunno, I'm a fan of imagery in music and all that, but aside from the sound volume, I couldn't really find anything in the performance I found interesting.
As I watched, it also got me to thinking how much I really hate judgements of music genres and prevention (real prevention). Lately I've been trying to watch my usage of language when judging music/art. I have become really annoyed with outright statements of how something "sucks" or whatever. As I was watching Sun, I thought about it even more... the fact that surely a good majority of the people there would be really god damn quick to judge some emo/screemo (or whatever) band's performance for being contrived when I really felt like what occurred at the House was much of the same thing: minimal substance and a lot of posturing.
Sure enough, the second I left, a guy that had been in Rockford that night helping John at a different show was airing his displeasure with missing the Sunn show in exchange for "a bunch of gay emo dues (to which he went on using an effeminate "accent" and body language to impersonate the singer and mock him)." I got really fucking annoyed, because the way I saw it, what had transpired in DeKalb wasn't that much different, just tougher or more evil or whatever.

When I move to chicago, if I ever start using the term "the suburbs" to refer to a specific town I am going to (eg, instead of saying, "yeah, I'm in Elgin tonight"... or, "yeah, I'm in Bartlett tonight"... I start saying, "yeah, I'm in the suburbs tonight"), fucking shoot me dead, and then shoot me a couple extra times to be sure.

so, about a month ago my dad offered me a trade: the shit Dell tower I've had since I moved out here to DeKalb (just about 6 years) for this pretty old but decent/workable laptop he has. It made sense for me to just have a laptop since I plan on moving around and also who the fuck utilizes computer towers anymore, and I guess the deal worked for him cause he could gut the tower and make it a linux machine.
So, he took the tower and got rid of all the shit on it (after I bought a terra-byte hard drive to store all my shit/future shit) and moved all his files from his laptop to the tower... apparently a process that took about two weeks, leaving me computer-less.
This past weekend he finally finished and I got the laptop on, like, friday or something, telling me whatever was left on there I could just erase. Sure enough, a couple days after he got the computer to me, he called, desperately trying to find out if I had already wiped the computer clean. He had left some old tax stuff on there that he totally needed... wluckily I hadn't gotten rid of it (because I did go through it and get rid of any money programs that took up any large amount of space... somehow I must have missed and not deleted the two programs he needed).
He took the computer back again a few days ago to get all the final stuff he needed off the laptop and onto the tower for good.
...well, turns out the files are so old (or something) that he would have to buy new software (or something) just to convert them to get them off the laptop. Anyway, he called me today and says to me, he says, "ok so this is enough hassle, bullshit, and money, that how about I just keep this laptop for the files and buy you a new one?" I said I didn't feel like he needed to spend that kind of money on me, but he explained that in the end it would cost just as much either way and I may as well get a new machine rather than a, like, four year old one.
So, uhm, score.
